Devlog #2: Prototype

Welcome to the second part of the devlog for our game in process: C.A.R Car Arena Rumble.
This week we mainly fixed on finishing the artbible, our tech document, making our Game Design Document and some more prototyping, which is all important for the preparations for our next step: the production sprints.

Design

  • We have few more 2D concept sketches that we quickly translated into 3D, they’re not finished models yet, but this shows how our cars will look proportions wise and shape wise.

  • We also made quick sketches of the power ups of our car, to visualize where they will be mounted on the car. We also took into account the size, compared to the size of the base body of the car.
  • One of our artists has taken a look into the materials and shaders within Unity. They eventually came up with a shader that perfectly can control a gradient over the
    material of a car.

.
  • Another artist has looked into our particles. To make the process easier, they first made a few effects in Unreal with Niagara Particle System, and then later on we will try to imitate this effect in Unity. We thought it would be easier to do this, since we artists know the Niagara Particle System already, we can use it to research the particle at first, style wise.

Mechanics

  • One of the main things our programmers worked on is the movement of our little car. They made sure it mimics realistic car movement. It also had backward car steering.
  • on camera, which now will follow the player.

  • They also worked on the collision of 2 cars: either one or both cars will be knocked back, or, one or both cars could be slowed down or come to a halt. It all depends on the place of impact, the team they are in (if you play team death match), the velocity of the cars, the car mods they are equipped and their impact multiplier.

  • We now are able to pause the game as well.

  • We also have an Item spawn point that can load in different meshes for our power ups of the car.

  • One programmer also took a look into one of the power ups: the ram mechanic, which works fine as well! It basically increases the impact multiplier of your car. Upon impacting with the battering ram, the usual knock-back effect will be replaced with a slow of effect of 25%.

Next week, we will have our first production sprint!
